Custom Concern: Lavender Bicycle

Cheri Messerli's bike lavender bicycle road touring bike

I’m so excited that I have finally completed customizing my bike. It took a long time to get it to happen. It was an old metallic olive green women’s Motobecane and now it’s a finally a silvery lavender.
This was quite a process to get it a different color and then rebuilt. It had to be stripped of parts and then of paint. I had to find a paint genius who could match the color in my head, which I did! Ray from Ray’s Auto Paint in Los Angeles is a color genius. I then had to figure out how to paint it which did not end up being possible until I came to LA, all the auto shops in nyc that I contacted said they were “amused but too busy” to paint a bike. So I ordered a spray gun, used my Dad’s air compressor, and using a pretty serious air mask David painted it for me. Then we took it over to Tony who is a crazy bike expert and he rebuilt it and gave me a good deal. It’s been a long and slow process so I decided to share this in case anyone out there was dreaming of a bike in a particular color like me. It took a lot of friends to make this happen so thank you to Dan from the Arm, Ray, Tony from Chicago Bikes and most of all David.

The RIDE-ARC bike ride at the Port of Long Beach was pretty interesting since it was a rare opportunity to get to ride bikes through terminal island. As our guide through the port pointed out, it’s easy to take the fact that most of the things I wear and own come through this port. It was cool getting to see giant hills of salt too.

I already loved the Jack Spade store for its incredible interior aesthetic and all of the cool things there are to look at among the merchandise, but now I love that store even more since my bicycle bag arrived in the mail today! I had been thinking about it since I saw it there a year ago, but it was kind of pricey for a bike bag. I asked last week and they said there was ONE left in red in the Kate Spade outlet on sale! It was shipped to me along with a handwritten note on a cute postcard. The guy working there was so nice. It arrived just in time for the RIDE-ARC Port of Long Beach ride tonight. David has one on the way too, but in black. I can’t wait to get my bike painted lavender. Still looking for the correct way to strip the paint off, or sand it, etc.. Right now it’s metallic olive green so this bag is going to look a bit Christmasy on it right now.

I’ve been wanting to paint my bike lavender since I saw this bike in Paris in September

I found someone to custom make the paint, now I need to figure out the best way to paint it.
