2010 sounded so far away and yet here it is! Spring’s shows gave us a peak into a start of a new direction that is not quite there yet but hopeful all the same. While many designers played it safe with very wearable/sellable collections, some chose to not let the economy hinder their creativity and really let go, but I think it’s going to be a couple more seasons until we really start to see things change. Fashion is pretty stuck in it’s ways right now. Hopefully the start of the change will be with the magazines! Let the editorials be free from the chains of advertising!! Let there be more creativity and style!!!!!

I love the drapey-silky-jersey bag look from these designers and others inspired by Alexander Wang Fall 2009, but I don’t know how well this look translates to real life. Walking the streets, I hardly see real people wearing this look — it’s simply unflattering. I haven’t even seen any real celebrities going for this look. Check out recent photos of Chloe Sevigny, the girl you would expect to go ga-ga over this, and even she’s not falling for this.

I could see why designers want to foist this look on us. 1) t-shirt jersey as a material is much cheaper than chiffon, silk, woolen knits. In an economy like this, they can still charge designer prices for what are essentially large baggy belted t-shirts while meeting the consumer somewhere in the middle and offering a product that is not going to cost as much as stuff in their previous seasons. 2) With a recession, they can be as creative as they want b/c no one is really buying anyway.
